New York: An Ocean City

New York City has the most coastline of any major city in the United States. Despite the majority of its landmass being scattered across a series of islands, most of its residents never even consider the saltwater world by which they are surrounded. These photos are a record of my many encounters with the marine residents of our ocean city. Email for licensing and purchase.

The waters around New York City have seen drastic change in recent decades, a consequence of the industrial era and climate change. One such change is the growing prominence of coastal bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops erebennus), a species thought to be once far less common in waters so far north. Today, they are a consistent member of the coastal ecosystem, and are regularly seen from city beaches and even into the upper New York Harbor.

Some images taken in collaboration with NYC whale-watcher American Princess Cruises and non-profit Gotham Whale.

Many more photos available on my Instagram.
